Coat hooks
If your front hall or mudroom doesn’t allow for closet space, coat hooks may be the best solution. Look for styles that attach multiple hooks to one flat panel or coat racks that can look stylish and sophisticated. Hooks are great for durable coats and jackets, but can damage other delicate materials. If the garment is stretchy or will be on the hook for a prolonged amount of time, it might be better to hang the garment on a clothes hanger instead to prevent fabric puckers.
Not many men wear formal hats these days, but nevertheless felt hats should only be stored on hooks if the hat can be protected. The material in older styled hats is delicate and can wear or become stretched. Coat-and-hat hook designs usually have rounded hooks to prevent damage to any material. In such a dual-hook design, the coat should be hung on the lower hook and the hat on the upper to prevent the coat from crumpling the hat.
Hanging your hooks
Hooks should be fastened to the wall slightly above eye level to avoid injury. You also want to attach hooks higher on a wall to prevent garments from dragging on the floor. Attach your hooks to wall studs for extra support and use long screws. If the hook can’t bear the weight that’s being put on it, it will pull out of the wall. Use drywall fasteners and drill on a downward angle if your studs are inconveniently space.
Coat hooks for kids
If you have small children in your home, brighten up your mudroom or your kids’ bedrooms with coat hooks in bright primary colors or creative shapes. Hang the hooks at a height that’s easily accessible for small people and encourage your children to pick up after themselves by using the hooks.
